hello from the person behind this thing!

hello from the person behind this thing!

I'm Verity, illustrator, printmaker, note-keeper, and the one at the wheel here.

I grew up on the water, more or less - in the North East of England. My father was a maritime pilot on the River Tees - the person who climbs aboard a stranger's ship in all weathers, day or night and brings it safely into port, or takes it safely out to sea.

I spent my childhood around charts, tide tables, the shipping forecast and the particular calm of someone whose job is to navigate other people's storms. Family holidays were spent sailing around the west coast of Scotland when I was too young to know what a privilege that was.

This little site borrows elements from Dad's world. A Port in a Storm is somewhere I dock when things are loud and I hope others might check in every now and again to see what I'm up to.

Now based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with a view of the port from my workspace. I make prints and keep notes here at my own pace away from the constant scrolling. No algorithm, no likes or reposts… just a quiet place you can visit whenever you like.

Mostly I will be sharing my personal work, sketches, prints, messy experiments, my dogs, interesting discoveries and snapshots of my process and the small bits and bobs of a quiet space by the sea. If any of this is interesting to you, then I'm glad to have you here. Please enjoy.
